What is green fins?

Green Fins is an international initiative managed by The Reef-World Foundation in collaboration with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). Its objective is to safeguard coral reefs and marine ecosystems by promoting environmentally sustainable practices in scuba diving and snorkeling.
What does Green Fins mean in practice?
1. Protecting coral reefs
Divers are instructed to maintain proper buoyancy, keep their fins clear of coral, and refrain from touching or disturbing marine life.
2. Preventing environmental damage
Operators strive to prevent detrimental practices, including anchoring on reefs, feeding fish, and discharging pollutants into the sea.
3. Reducing waste and pollution
Dive centres are encouraged to minimize the use of single-use plastics, responsibly manage waste, and reduce the environmental impact of their daily operations.
4. Educating divers and staff
Members are provided with environmental guidance and resources to enhance their practices and assist clients in understanding how to protect the underwater environment.
How is a Green Fins dive centre assessed?
Green Fins offers two primary membership categories:
Certified Member: In countries with an active Green Fins assessment program, operators undergo an on-site evaluation, receive training, and obtain feedback. Certified members are classified as Bronze, Silver, or Gold based on their environmental performance.
Digital Member: Operators engage in online self-assessments, receive guidance, and develop action plans to enhance their environmental practices. This membership does not include the independent on-site assessment.
What does this mean for Pisces Diving?
For a dive center like Pisces Diving in Sodwana Bay, Green Fins membership underscores a commitment to:
Protecting the area's reefs and marine life.
Training staff to adhere to environmentally responsible diving practices.
Assisting clients in diving without harming the environment.
Enhancing sustainability in business operations.
Green Fins membership is also one of the three prerequisites for PADI Eco Center status, along with participation in PADI AWARE's Adopt the Blue program and demonstrated environmental performance.
Conclusion: Green Fins ensures that ocean enjoyment does not compromise the ocean's well-being. It assists dive centers in transforming environmental responsibility into practical, measurable actions.
